What is a Mala?
A mala is simply a string of 108-109 beads that are used in a meditation practice.
It is a tool to help you count mantras, and acts as a tactile guide as you sit in silence. Whether you’re just starting a meditation practice, or you're an advanced practitioner, Mala beads are a great tool to help focus your attention. They provide something tactile to come back to when your mind starts to wander. (Which happens to everyone!) It’s a gentle reminder every few seconds to reground and refocus.
Mala beads have been used by yogis and spiritual seekers for thousands of years to help keep their minds focused during meditation. Malas were first created in India 3000 years ago (with roots in Hinduism & Buddhism) and were used for a special style of meditation called Japa, which means, “to recite”. The term ‘mala’ is a Sanskrit word for “meditation garland.”
Why 108?
The average distance from the sun to the earth, and the moon to the earth, is 108 times their respective diameters.
According to traditional Buddhism, 108 represents the number of mortal desires of mankind which one must overcome to achieve Nirvana.
The dance of Shiva is said to have 108 poses.
There are 54 letters in the Sanskrit alphabet and two variants of each—masculine and feminine. (54+54=108)
In Astrology there are 12 constellations and 9 arc segments. There are 12 houses and 9 planets. (12 X 9 = 108)
The heart chakra is the convergence of 108 lines of energy.
I could go on… but we will stop here!

Hello Friends!
My name is Lauren, I am an artist.
I studied studio art from 2012 - 2014 in college but have been practicing and creating since I was small, and I'm sure many of my past lives as well. ;)
When I create I am still, and comfortable while simultaneously at the edge of a cliff, full of joy, uncertainty, excitement, just oozing possibility. Art is presence.
Everything I create represents an experience, a vision/idea , a reflection of who I am or how I saw the world in that moment.
Most recently, I have been inspired by the human body, the female form, mindfulness/meditation, the human experience, and the beauty of nature that always surrounds us.
I am enjoying experimenting with size, medium, color, texture, as well as canvas (I often use recycled materials that inspire me). Every piece is different from the last as I let spirit guide me.
I would love to hear from you. Subscribe or follow to keep up on my projects!
Please let me know what you think of my work, if you have an interest in a commissioned piece, a collab, or if you have any questions.
xoxo
