Do you remember playing the ISpy game on a long car ride when you were a kid?
This quilt is not too big, not too small, it’s just the right size for a long car or plane ride with the kids and a game to play when quieting down a little one at bedtime!
I include a list of tools and all the yardage you will need to complete this quilt along with hints and diagrams to help the beginner and guide the expert through the adventure!
I HATE TRIANGLES! (well I don't hate them, but I don't like to cut or piece them if I don't have to)!
My pattern/method allows for a little more space past the corners of your 4 block unit by redesigning this “Tilted Block” pattern to make it more forgiving so your “points” won’t get cut off in the seam allowances when joining your blocks together, little wasted fabric & NO TRIANGLES to cut, arrange, flip or sew!
On my journey to make a better "tilted block", I made 2 quilts using 2 different methods (there are many)! to tilt the square. The first time I made one I added triangles to the sides of my center ISpy center blocks. it was challenging to get the triangles to face the right direction and I thought that method slow & fussier than it needed to be! (I hate triangles)! The second method required you create a complicated 2 part template, I didn't like that one either!
I found making a super simple square template or using a 12 1/2” quilters square ruler was quicker and SO MUCH EASIER!!
Fabric for the Kylee ISPY Quilt:
(48) 5” x 5” squares for ISPY 4 block units ~ (I used the Quick and Easy "Layer Cake" method (instructions included) for the Kylee quilt using 12 "Layer Cake" squares).
1 1/2 YARDS white block background fabric
5/8 YARD yellow for vertical sashing strips
5/8 YARD green horizontal sashing strips
Scrap blue for cornerstones
Scrap red for cornerstones
1 YARD red outside border
5/8 YARD binding
3 1/4 YARDS quilt back (horizontal seam)
56” x 70” piece of batting ( includes 4” overage)
